“The misapprehension about gender performativity is this: that gender is a choice, or that gender is a role, or that gender is a construction that one puts on, as one puts on clothes in the morning, that there is a ‘one’ who is prior to this gender, a one who goes to the wardrobe of gender and decides with deliberation which gender it will be today.”―Judith Butler, Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of “Sex”

The group exhibition “The Model” opening at Space Debris on February 6th, is a cirtical commentary in counter argument to the stereotypical roles on gender. As well as her book “Bodies that Matter” Judith Butler also inquires in her book “Gender Trouble” how the assumed continium of the relation between gender and desire form the identity politics. “The Model” hopes to evaluate the basis of these identity formations within the parameters of Turkey.

The exhibition consist of personal and collective inquisitions on contradictions and models of gender presented by the society that are forced upon the individual like piece of clothing that has to fit and is being nailed on the head if it doesn’t like fitting a wig on a bust.
The artists explore the differentiating emotional hiatus, sometimes felt as anxiety, sometimes as a feeling of being in between, and search if it is possible to free from the gender troubles that societal power insist on.
